PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY SHOOTS

The Costa del Sol Photographic Society meets regularly for outdoor shoots with some extremely interesting photo opportunities. The society meets every two weeks from September, through to the end of June ....with a couple of social events in July and August each year to look forward to. As a general rule they go on “Shoots” for two meetings and then have a “Home” meeting for the third meeting. When they go on “Shoots” members are usually given two categories as subjects for the shoot and then, at the home meeting, members bring along their best photo from each category. The winner from each category is sometimes published in the Town Crier. This photo was taken by Chris Hicks at The Valley of the Fallen. For more details contact Ray on 952 446 893.

JOBS FOR PRESIDENTS FAMILY A NO-NO

As the campaign heats up for the regional election next March, the main opposition party, the Partido Popular, has promised to implement ten measures "to improve democratic quality and re-establish political ethics as the backbone of all public behaviour" if it wins. One of them is that the Junta de Andalucia president will not be able to give jobs to family members. There have been several financial scandals involving members of the Junta's current president, Manuel Chaves, in recent years.

LUNG DISEASES ARGUMENT CONTINUES

According to a study by the National Epidemiology Centre, the incidence of lung-related illnesses such as bronchitis, asthma and emphysema in Alhuarín de la Torre is lower than the national average, and not higher as local residents claim. The local council has accused the town's Health Defence Platform - which is waging a campaign against nearby quarries - of being alarmist. Even so, the council has asked the Junta de Andalucia to take a closer look at the situation.

THE 700 EUROS MIRACLE

It was an insurance collector's worst nightmare. The collector - who for obvious reasons wished to remain anonymous - told a local newspaper how he lost his wallet, with 700 euros inside. He was collecting in the Hipercor area of Malaga and realised his wallet was gone when he called on a client in a block of flats. He couldn't imagine where he had left it and was on the point of paying his company out of his own pocket when one of the client's neighbours rang him. Three workmen had spotted the wallet in the doorway of the block. There was no identification in it so they rang all the doorbells in the block until they found the neighbour who the collector had told about the loss. They got his name from the insurance company and returned the wallet to him, with the money still inside. "It was a miracle," the man said. It also shows there are still some honest people around.

LIGHTS WILL BE LATER THIS YEAR

People may have been wondering if all this talk about climate change will make local councils put their money where their mouths are when it come to Christmas lights. Mijas town council at least intends to set an example. A spokesman announced last week that the lights would be turned on two weeks' later this year, in mid-December. In many towns in Andalucia the lights are turned on before the end of November. It remains to be seen how many councils will follow Mijas's example.
