The Tempest Kickboxing Academy
The Tempest Kickboxing Academy,
based in Benalmadena and Calahonda, took 2 of their
younger kickboxers to the UK recently for an
international Kickboxing tournament.
Billy Brown and Edward Taplin, both from Benalmadena did
themselves and the Costa Del Sol proud in their 3 round
kickboxing bouts. Taplin fought first against Reece
Young of Newcastle in the UK and after a very hard
fought battle the bout was awarded to Young on points. |
 |
 |
Both fighters received a standing
ovation from the 300 spectators for their efforts. Brown
was next up against Jake Sansom of Newcastle in the UK.
This bout was very fast and very hard with a fantastic
performance by both young men. In the end Brown took the
decision, again by points. All four young men should be
very proud of themselves, not just for the performances
on the day, but also all the hard training they put in
when preparing for the competition. |
The Tempest Kickboxing Academy runs classes in Benalmadena and
Calahonda for kids and adults and all are welcome. For more

Málaga Flamenco Pasión’ - An introduction To
Flamenco
If you are a lover of the fantastic
flamenco and you are looking for a enjoyable evening out watching some of the
best in Andalucia then you should head for the Alameda Theatre in Malaga.
Following a successful run of several months last year a new version of ‘Málaga
Flamenco Pasión’ (Málaga Flamenco Passion), began a new run in February this
year and will continue until 26 May
The show is the work of the renowned flamenco dancer and choreographer Paco Mora
and this new version is aimed at tourists mainly.
The new version of the show is a shorter version of the original lasting just
under an hour. It is intended that the show is a high quality introduction to
flamenco singing and dancing while they are enjoying their visit to Andalucia.
In the show the seven artists perform to the main ‘palos’ (flamenco styles) in
Málaga Province while the audience enjoys the fantastic music and dance
accompanied with a glass of fine Spanish wine
Below is a brief description of Palos
There are over 50 different palos flamenco, although some of them are rarely
performed. A palo can be defined as musical form of flamenco. Flamenco songs are
classified into palos based on several musical and non-musical criteria such as
its basic rhythmic pattern, mode, chord progression, form of the stanza, or
geographic origin. The rhythmic patterns of the palos are also often called
compás. A compás (the Spanish normal word for either time signature or bar) is
characterised by a recurring pattern of beats and accents.
So if you love flamenco or you want to learn more then contact the theatre box
office.
There is going to be one show a week starting at 7pm every Monday

Comets over the Costa
Of
course you remember Bill Haley and the Comets.
Bill was the mild-mannered, moon-faced American
with a kiss curl and an iffy taste in sports
jackets, who ushered in Rock ‘n’ Roll more than
50 years ago. Bill died in 1981 but his re-formed
Comets are currently on a five-date tour of
Europe and paid a brief visit to the Costa del
Sol last Saturday (9th Feb.).
The show was the highpoint of the 14th Rockin’
Race Jamboree, a celebration of 1950s Americana
held at the Palacio Congreso in Torremolinos.
This vibrant “roots” music fest is a truly
unique event this side of Catalonia, bringing in
fans from all over Spain and beyond.
|
|
It is not simply for
followers of traditional 1950’s style
rock’n’roll, although there is that in abundance,
but a celebration of every conceivable hybrid of
rockabilly, blues and country music imaginable.
And the best thing, unlike so many concerts
nowadays, is that there is not a backing track
or synthesiser to be heard. Every note is as it
should be – live. |
 |
 |
I
last saw the Comets play on the Costa in 2004
and sadly since then original pianist Johnny
Grande has passed away. This sprightly
five-piece line-up of guitar, bass, drums, sax
and keyboards has to be unique, especially when
considering they notch up around 350 years
between them. A special mention must be made of
drummer Dick Richards who at 84 years of age
must be the oldest in the rock ‘n’ roll live
circuit. Our jaded Mr. Jagger should take heart… |
|
Impressive has to be the word. The “boys”,
neatly attired in blue box jackets, took to the
stage after midnight and promptly ploughed
through a generous set to an ecstatic audience.
The fans, mostly Spanish and under 25, were
surprising; a frantic scrum of leather jackets,
drape suits and enough hair gel to smother the
coast of Galicia. A modest gathering of older
ex-pats studied proceedings from the wings. |
 |
 |
All
the honking hits from their extensive back
catalogue including “Shake, Rattle and Roll”, “Birth
of the Boogie” and “See you later, Alligator”
were covered. There was even a smattering of
slow numbers including a delicious cover of the
late Sam Cooke’s “You send me”. But there was
really only one song the audience wanted to hear
and they were not to be disappointed. “Rock
Around the Clock”, played live, still has a
raucous energy, even if it does celebrate its
54th birthday in April. |
After a single encore the band good-naturedly appeared
to sign autographs for an eager throng of noticeably
young fans. The next day would see the band continue on
to another country and yet another gig.

Sell it on the Costa - Jackie and Sue make space
for everyone!
Two young British mothers here on the
Costa del Sol have awakened what
looks like a sleeping giant. They’ve found a way to clear clutter and help
others to do the same, and the success of the results of a casual coffee break
complaint, has fairly much taken over their lives.
Jackie Curbishley Green is a video and commercials producer who moved to Spain
permanently seven years ago. She is married with two school age children. Her
career has continued here, and she has made several pop videos and commercials
set on the Costa del Sol, but it is beginning to look as though she and her
friend Suzanne Amesbury, also the married mother of two young children and an
international property agent, have been overwhelmed by the success of an idea.
Chatting one day with Suzanne, they were both bemoaning the accumulation of
perfectly good things they no longer had uses for, which threatened to invade
their living space. Expensive cars sat on the street exposed to the elements,
whilst outgrown bikes, toys, clothes, books, ornaments and furniture squatted in
their garages.
The girls explored various thoughts about garage sales and car boot sales. It
suddenly occurred to them that if they had the problem of outgrown items, then
so did a lot of other people here. Finding Spanish auction sites daunting
because of the language difficulty, (though they both speak passably good
Spanish,) they came up with the great idea of an auction site for English
speaking people on the Costas.
It seems it was just what was needed because before the two girls had even
launched it with advertising, people were already rushing to put things on the
site: www.sellitonthecosta.com
The site launches officially on the 1st of March but is up and running with
auctions already under way, and indeed, some have already successfully completed.
It features everything from cars, children’s and adult’s clothing, games, toys,
furniture and household goods plus much more being added every day, so go ahead
and register to clear your attics and spare bedrooms and make room for the
summer. Don’t forget:
